World Down Syndrome Day — March 21
What is World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD)?
World Down Syndrome Day is a global awareness and advocacy day celebrated every year on March 21. The date, 3/21, was chosen to symbolize the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome.
On this day, people around the world come together to promote understanding, celebrate individuality, and advocate for inclusion and rights of people with Down syndrome. Since 2012, WDSD has been officially recognized by the United Nations.
Why WDSD Matters
- It shines a spotlight on inclusion, acceptance, and equal rights for individuals with Down syndrome.
- It counters stereotypes and misconceptions by celebrating the abilities, contributions, and humanity of people with Down syndrome.
- It reminds communities, schools, and policymakers of the need for support systems, accessibility, and opportunities for everyone.
- It connects global awareness with local action — giving organizations like DSNOCC a chance to gather, advocate, and grow together.
This year’s global theme invites us all to “Improve Our Support Systems.” It is a call to strengthen family, educational, medical, and community supports so people with Down syndrome can thrive.
